For the People and By the People: Delivering on the Promise of Gov 2.0

Outside of government , a generation of consumers is growing up in Web 2.0, where popular sites are fast, easy to use and full of user participation tools, from comments to popularity rankings. Why shouldn't government websites offer the same sort of experience? This question, which has been asked for a decade, has never been easier to answer: they should and they can. The technology has never been cheaper and easier to implement than it is today. And with the first Wired president having come into office on the back of a social networking-driven campaign, there's no shortage of encouragement from the top. There are limits to how far government sites can go, to be sure, due to regulations and law. But simply making public information that is already available easier to find and use could go a long way towards engaging an online citizenry with government in ways that can benefit both parties. This talk will look at examples in both federal and state government and see where they went right ... and wrong.
As Editor-in-chief of Wired magazine, Chris Anderson is one of the most knowledgeable and articulate voices on the future of technology and how it shapes our culture. Fresh on the heels of his insightful presentation at Smithsonian 2.0, this keynote address, which he is crafting specifically for the FOSE audience, promises to be powerfully thought-provocative for the government IT community.
